He said yes but his parents said no

1

So my boyfriend of three years finally proposed last month and I was on top of the world we talked about marriage for so long and he kept saying his parents aren’t ready but now he’s like nah I’m doing it I love you and I don’t care what they think—but then his mom called me yesterday. Sweet as pie tone but straight up said they had already picked a girl for him from back home she’s a doctor they’ve been talking to her family for months. He swears he told them no way I’m marrying you but he hasn’t confronted them in person he says it’ll just cause drama. We’ve been living together for a year and his mom still hasn’t visited she makes excuses. I found out they went to the temple last week and prayed for his future wife like it wasn’t me. I don’t want to be that girl who breaks up a family but I also can’t pretend this isn’t tearing me up. Sometimes I wonder if he even believes in us or just says it to keep me happy. His dad barely speaks English but I’ve tried so hard to connect. Last Diwali I cooked for hours his mom complimented the food then said You’ll make someone’s life nice one day. I cried in the bathroom. Idk what to do anymore

my cousin went through this exact thing with her then-fiancé. she thought he was all in but his parents had already arranged everything back in their hometown. he kept saying he was choosing her but never actually shut it down with them. sound familiar here’s what changed—she told him straight up if he didn’t cut off all contact with that other family and set boundaries with his mom within two weeks she was done. not yelling not crying just calm and firm. and get this—he waited until the last day to do it. but he did it i know it’s scary to ultimatum someone you love but ngl sometimes you gotta force the moment. if he’s still letting his mom talk to other families behind your back while you’re engaged? that’s not respect that’s convenience talk to him face to face. no texts. make him pick up the phone and call his parents right there while you’re on speaker and tell them it’s over. if he won’t do it then you already have your answer
