He sent me a cohabitation contract after we agreed to move in
So we’ve been together for 18 months, and finally agreed last week that I’d move from Hamburg to Milan in June. He was so emotional about it — cried, sent voice notes, called his mom right away. Then two days later, he emails me a cohabitation contract. Like, full notarized pages. Lists who pays what, ‘emotional contribution audits’ (his words), and says if we break up within 12 months, I owe him back rent. I… what? I asked if it was a joke. He said it’s ‘responsible’ and ‘Italians protect their assets.’ Look, I grew up with clear rules, but this feels cold. My parents lived in the same flat for 35 years and never had a document about who empties the dishwasher. We’re not married. We’re not even engaged. He’s done this kind of thing before — once sent me a spreadsheet of our ‘conflict balance’ after an argument. I love him, but this makes my stomach tight. Is this normal? Is it a red flag that I even need to ask?
