How do I handle my boyfriend's sudden anger?

So I’ve been dating this guy for about 5 months and he’s really sweet most of the time but when he gets angry it’s like a switch flips. Last week we were driving and someone cut us off and he started screaming at the top of his lungs throwing his hands up and I literally jumped in my seat. I didn’t even know people did that outside of movies. He’s 38 and I’m 24 and sometimes I wonder if that gap makes it worse like maybe he’s used to being in charge or whatever but idk. Another time we were arguing about something dumb like where to eat and he slammed his phone down so hard the screen cracked and just walked out. I waited 20 minutes for him to come back. When he did he said he was sorry but also that I pushed his buttons. I guess I just feel on edge now like I’m watching everything I say. Part of me thinks he just needs help but the other part is like damn this is scary sometimes. I care about him but I don’t want to walk on eggshells forever. Should I even try to talk about it or is this already a red flag I should run from lol
