How do you survive a long-distance relationship in your 20s?

24

My partner and I are both 24. We have been together for 3 years, but I just got a job offer in another city that is a 4-hour flight away. The opportunity is incredible for my career. He is supportive but scared. We both are. For those who have done long-distance successfully — what actually works? And how do you deal with the loneliness?

Did LDR for 2 years (NYC to London). What worked: 1. Set an end date — even approximate. "We will close the gap in X months" gives you both something to work towards. 2. Communication schedule — we did a video call every night before bed and texted throughout the day. Consistency matters more than quantity. 3. Visit schedule — we alternated visiting every 6-8 weeks. Having the next visit on the calendar makes the distance bearable. 4. Individual social lives — do not put your life on hold. The resentment will destroy you. 5. Be brutally honest about feelings — jealousy, loneliness, frustration. Bottling it up kills LDRs faster than distance does. It is hard but absolutely doable if you are both committed.
